Lesson Goals
You will learn about the basic tools needed in a microblading business, including the blades themselves, the ink holders, and mapping tools such as pencils and thread.
Microblading Blades
Microblading blades come in different shapes and sizes, each with its own unique function. The most common types of blades include:
- Curved Blade – a U-shaped blade that is used for filling in the brows and creating fine hair-like strokes.
- Straight Blade – a straight blade with a flat edge that is used for creating crisp, straight lines and for shading.
- Combo Blade – a blade that is a combination of a curved blade and a straight blade, used for creating both fine hair-like strokes and thicker lines.
- Slope Blade – a blade with a sloped edge that is used for creating a gradient effect and for filling in sparse areas of the brows.
- Drop Blade – a blade with a drop-shaped tip that is used for creating soft, natural-looking hair strokes.
- Flat Blade – a blade with a flat tip that is used for filling in larger areas and for shading.
The choice of blade depends on the desired look, skin type, and technique being used.

Ink Holders for Microblading Treatments
Pigment rings used in microblading can be made of plastic or metal and come in various sizes and shapes. They are used to hold pigments during the treatment and to control the amount of pigment that is deposited on the skin. Some common types of pigment rings include:
- Magnetic pigment rings: These rings have a magnetic closure and can be opened and closed with one hand.
- Screw-on pigment rings: These rings have a screw-on cap that can be tightened or loosened to control the amount of pigment dispensed.
- Snap-on pigment rings: These rings have a snap closure that can be easily opened and closed.
- Disposable pigment rings: These rings are made of plastic and are designed to be used once and then discarded.
Each type of pigment ring has its own advantages and disadvantages, and the choice of which to use often depends on personal preference and the specific needs of the microblading artist.
Mapping Tools in Microblading
Mapping tools are used in microblading to create a symmetrical and precise outline of the eyebrow shape before the actual microblading process. Some common types of mapping tools used in microblading include:
- Ruler/measurement tool: This tool is used to measure the distance between different points on the brow and to ensure symmetry.
- Stencils: These are pre-made templates in different shapes and sizes that can be placed on the brow to give the artist an idea of the desired shape.
- String/thread method: This involves using a piece of string or thread to map out the desired eyebrow shape.
- Brow mapping pencil: This is a specialized pencil that is used to create a map of the brow, including the shape and thickness.
The choice of mapping tool used depends on the preferences of the microblading artist and the specific needs of the client. The goal of mapping is to create a blueprint for the microblading process and ensure that the final result is symmetrical and natural-looking.
